Instilling Eye Drops

In order to get the best results from your eye drops, they must be instilled properly. There are two possible ways to do this effectively:

Standing up/Sitting down:

  1. Place yourself in front of a mirror.
  2. Hold the bottle in your dominant hand, and with your non-dominant hand, pull down on your lower eyelid to create a “pocket”.
  3. Tilt your head back slightly, and bring the bottle close. Aim and squeeze the bottle so that the drop lands in the pocket created by pulling down on your lower lid. DO NOT TOUCH THE BOTTLE TIP TO YOUR LID OR EYE.
  4. Close your eyes for 1-2 minutes after the drop is instilled so that it can be absorbed properly.

Laying down:

  1. Lay down flat on your bed.
  2. Hold the bottle in your dominant hand, and with your non-dominant hand, hold your eyelids open.
  3. While staring straight up at the ceiling, hold the bottle directly over your eye and squeeze. DO NOT TOUCHE THE BOTTLE TIP TO YOUR LID OR EYE.
  4. Close your eyes for 1-2 minutes after the drop is instilled so that it can be absorbed properly.

If your optometrist has you using more than one kind of eyedrop at a time, be sure to wait 5 MINUTES in between using each one. This is important so you do not wash out one drop with another!
